In April 2018, Haub, a prominent retail tycoon, disappeared while training for a ski mountaineering race in Zermatt, Switzerland. Despite an extensive search, his body was never found, leading a German court to declare him legally dead in 2021. Haub, the former managing director of the Tengelmann Group, left behind a family and a vast business empire.
Recent revelations by German broadcaster RTL suggest Haub may be living in Moscow with a woman named Veronika Ermilova. Allegations indicate that Haub maintained extensive contact with Ermilova before his disappearance, raising suspicions of a staged death with assistance from Moscow.
