The invitation from the police came on Tuesday, asking key TIB members, including National Coordinator Sanyaolu Juwon, to meet with the new Commissioner of Police, Olanrewaju Ishola, to discuss “issues of national interest.”
Sources within the TIB, who spoke anonymously, expressed concerns that attending the physical meeting might lead to their arrest. However, the Lagos police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the invitation and reassured that the meeting was intended to be friendly, stating that there were no plans to arrest anyone. The scheduled October protest is expected to be one of the main topics of discussion.
In the letter from the movement’s solicitors, TIB noted that several executive members were outside Lagos and unable to attend in person. As a result, the group proposed a virtual meeting, allowing all key participants to join and contribute remotely.
“We respectfully propose a virtual meeting as an alternative, enabling all necessary participants to join remotely and contribute productively to the discussions,” the letter read. If a physical meeting is essential, the group offered to reschedule to early October, when all team members would be available.
The planned protest, tagged “FearlessInOctober,” is scheduled for October 1, 2024. It aims to address critical issues, including economic hardship, inflation, and fuel scarcity, which continue to affect Nigerians.
