Former Minister of Defence and a founding stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bello Haliru Mohammed has formally bowed out of active politics, ending more than 40 years in public service.
Mohammed announced his resignation from the PDP in a letter dated November 14, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of Nassarawa Ward 1 in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi State. Copies of the letter were also sent to the PDP state chairman, the national chairman, and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
He said the decision followed “deep reflection” and a sense of fulfilment after decades of contributing to national development.
Mohammed, who recently turned 80, noted that the time had come to take a well-deserved rest and allow younger leaders to shape the country’s political direction.
“It has been a rare privilege to serve our nation and our party in various capacities,” “From my early days in public service to my tenures as Minister of Communications and Minister of Defence, to my service as Acting National Chairman and later Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP, I have always sought to contribute to the unity, progress, and democratic consolidation of our dear country”, he wrote.
Mohammed remains one of the most influential figures in the PDP’s history. His career spans pivotal roles including Minister of Communications (1999–2001), Acting National Chairman of the PDP (2011), Minister of Defence (2011–2012), and Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (2015).
He was also a key player in public administration, national security reforms, and party restructuring during the Fourth Republic.
Reflecting on his journey, he said he had witnessed Nigeria’s “trials and triumphs” and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the nation’s democratic process.
He extended appreciation to party members, supporters, and associates for their loyalty and partnership over the years.
Although stepping away from partisan politics, Mohammed pledged to remain devoted to the ideals of national unity and good governance.
“I shall continue to play my part as an elder citizen, and my experience will always be available whenever my guidance is required in the interest of our nation,” he said.
Mohammed’s exit is expected to reshape political dynamics within the PDP in Kebbi State, where he has long been a senior stakeholder, adviser, and key mobiliser.
His departure comes at a time the party is struggling to rebuild and reposition itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.
