A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has issued an order directing factional Speaker Edison Ehie to preside over the state House of Assembly’s activities pending the determination of a motion before the court.
The court also prohibited lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, from using the assembly premises, citing the governor’s directive that the facility was undergoing renovation.
Justice M.W Danagogo issued the order in an experte motion (Suit No. PHC/3030/CS/2023), with the Rivers State House of Assembly as the first claimant, Ehie as the second claimant, and Martin Amaewhule and Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol as defendants.
Edison, represented by Senior Advocate of Nigeria D.I Iboroma, sought the court’s order to prevent Amaewhule and others from entering the assembly complex until the burnt chamber is fully renovated by the government.
The court, in an interim order, granted Edison’s requests, warning that he would pay N50m in damages if the application is deemed frivolous, and set a date of December 21 for the motion on notice after ordering the claimants to serve the processes on the defendants by December 13.
