The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has taken steps to intervene and prevent the closure of Shoprite’s only branch in Kano State. Shoprite, one of Nigeria’s prominent supermarket chains, had announced its decision to exit the Ado Bayero Mall in Kano, citing a “challenging economic situation” as the reason.
Senator Barau I. Jibrin’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, issued a statement revealing the senator’s intention to meet with Shoprite’s management in Abuja this week to discuss and hopefully resolve the matter. The Deputy President of the Senate emphasized that while it is a business issue, efforts will be made to encourage Shoprite to reconsider its decision and continue operating in Kano.
Mudashir pointed out the significant business opportunities in Kano, known as the commercial nerve center of northern Nigeria. In the context of actively seeking investors, Senator Barau I. Jibrin expressed the commitment not to stand idly by and allow Shoprite to leave the state, underlining the importance of retaining businesses in Kano.
