The Kano State Police Command has apprehended a couple, Dayyabu Abdullahi and Hasfat Surajo, for allegedly killing Nafiu Hafiz, who owed them a sum of N10 million.
Hafiz had promised to repay the money within ten months, but the deadline elapsed in October. He reportedly requested an extension until December, which he failed to meet. A friend of the deceased, Fatima Gambo, revealed that Hafiz, unable to pay the couple the borrowed N10 million, had pleaded for a further extension. The company for which he was executing a project had not reimbursed him due to the CEO’s recent celebration of two daughters’ weddings.
In the latest attempt to seek an extension of the debt repayment on Wednesday, the wife of the man he owed allegedly stabbed him. The couple then kept his body in their house and, later that night, informed his father that their son had undergone surgery at the hospital and died.
Suspicion arose when the father and his brothers, arriving in Kano from Bauchi State to retrieve the remains for burial, discovered the body still bleeding. Despite the couple’s claim that they had invited an Imam to perform Islamic burial rites, the inconsistencies raised doubts. One of the brothers, Hafizu Salisu, contacted the police to report the situation.
The spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command, Haruna Abdullahi, confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation is underway to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators.
