Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady, inaugurated the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme in Abuja on Thursday, aimed at providing assistance to 250 senior citizens aged 65 and above across the 36 states of the Federation.
During the event, Senator Tinubu revealed that the Governing Board of the Renewed Hope Initiative had approved the disbursement of N950 million for the Elderly Support Scheme. Each state is set to receive N25 million, with the targeted beneficiaries receiving N100,000 each. The First Lady emphasized that the scheme is committed to ensuring fair distribution without discrimination among the states.
Under the theme “Better Days Ahead,” the initiative seeks to alleviate the economic challenges faced by elderly citizens and lighten their burdens during the festive period. The disbursement aims to provide crucial financial support to vulnerable elderly citizens, including those from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA).
Senator Tinubu underscored the significance of prioritizing the elderly population, expressing the initiative’s commitment to honoring their contributions and addressing the challenges they encounter.
In her welcome address, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, the FCT Minister of State, emphasized that the mission of the Renewed Hope Initiative goes beyond material distribution. It also aims to foster a sense of community, compassion, and respect for elders, youths, the girl child, and widows.
The Mandate Secretary of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Mrs. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, highlighted additional humanitarian services provided by the scheme, including free medical check-ups, free drugs, free eye check-ups and glasses, and free high blood pressure check-ups and counseling. She expressed appreciation to the FCT Administration, FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, for implementing President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda through the creation of the FCT Women’s Secretariat.
