Tragedy struck in Plateau State as at least 14 people were killed by gunmen in a night attack in the Lisham Kwahasnat community between Saturday and Sunday. The assailants targeted villagers, prompting an enraged response from the community. The villagers pursued the attackers, resulting in the burning of houses and the destruction of properties in different localities on Sunday.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Alabo Alfred, expressed intention to gather information about the situation and provide details when contacted on Sunday. On the other hand, Captain Oya James, the spokesman for the military task force responsible for maintaining peace in the state, confirmed the killings in Jos and condemned the renewed violence. Additional troops were deployed to the troubled communities to prevent further deterioration of law and order.
Captain James explained that assailants had attacked a village between Mangu and Bokkos, killing 14 persons. In the wake of the incident, villagers reportedly also targeted herders, assuming they were responsible for the killings. The military task force has been actively responding to the situation, moving from one location to another to prevent further violence.
Meanwhile, Governor Caleb Mutfwang, in his Christmas goodwill message, urged citizens to embrace peace and love despite the prevailing challenges. He emphasized the need to rekindle love for humanity during the festive season and encouraged individuals to contribute to a more united, peaceful, and prosperous Plateau.
