The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested contractor James Okwete in connection with the ongoing investigation into the alleged laundering of N37 billion by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development during the tenure of former Minister Sadiya Umar-Farouk.
A reliable source from the EFCC revealed that Okwete, the contractor, has provided useful statements regarding Umar-Farouk and former directors-general of the ministry. The probe coincides with investigations into three other former ministers who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari, with an estimated graft amount of N150 billion.
The N37.1 billion in question was reportedly transferred from the Federal Government’s coffers to 38 different bank accounts in five legacy commercial banks connected to or belonging to Okwete.
Umar-Farouk and some former directors-general under the ministry may face arrest following the details of financial misappropriation revealed by the contractor during investigations.
As of the latest reports, Umar-Farouk and her former media aide, Nneka Ikem, could not be reached for comments. The contractor, Okwete, is currently in custody at the EFCC Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, and has been cooperating with investigators.
The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs oversees various agencies, including the National Social Investment Office, the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internationally Displaced Persons. Umar-Farouk was the pioneer Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development.
