A tragic incident unfolded in Edo State as Police Inspector Jonathan Okouromi allegedly shot and killed Sergeant Abosele Akhere during an operation in Ikponwosa/Egban community, Egor Local Government Area.
The operation, carried out by operatives of the Edo State Police Anti-Kidnapping Squad and the Control Intelligence Rapid Response Squad, aimed to apprehend suspected cultists who had been causing unrest in the Ikponwosa/Egban community.
During the operation, Sergeant Abosele Akhere successfully arrested a notorious cultist known as ‘Raggae,’ who was a prime suspect in cult-related activities. However, the situation took a tragic turn when Inspector Jonathan Okouromi reportedly shot Akhere from behind without apparent cause.
A source revealed, “All of a sudden, Inspector Jonathan Okouromi just lifted his gun, pulled the trigger and shot Akhere from the back. Nobody knew what happened or why he did that. He just fired him from behind. The man fell immediately and started bleeding.”
The injured officer was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by the attending doctor. Inspector Okouromi allegedly escaped with his gun upon realizing the gravity of the situation. The arrested cult suspect, ‘Reggae,’ also managed to escape, while another individual, Mr. Agbontaen Monday, a member of the Eiye confraternity, was apprehended.
As of the latest update, Inspector Okouromi is being sought by the police in the Ugbowo division, and the body of the slain police sergeant has been deposited at the mortuary. The investigation into the incident is ongoing. The Police Public Relations Officer in Edo State, Chidi Nwabuzor, was not available for comment as he stated that he was on holiday.
