The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly invited the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, for an interrogation regarding an ongoing probe into the alleged laundering of N37,170,855,753.44 under her watch through a contractor, James Okwete.
According to an exclusive document seen by the correspondent, Umar-Farouq was requested to appear before interrogators at the EFCC headquarters in Jabbi, Abuja, on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, to provide explanations regarding the alleged fraud.
The document stated, “The commission is investigating a case of money laundering involving the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development during your time as minister.”
It further indicated that the former minister could face allegations of money laundering pursuant to Section 38 (I) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act, 2004, and Section 21 of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011.
Umar-Farouq had earlier denied knowledge of the contractor, James Okwete, who is currently held by the EFCC. The former minister asserted that Okwete neither worked for nor represented her in any capacity. She tweeted her denial and expressed readiness to defend her actions, stewardship, and programs during her tenure.
The EFCC has not commented on the invitation of the former minister, and a top official suggested that the contractor Okwete has been cooperating with investigators, providing details that allegedly implicate Umar-Farouq and former directors-general of agencies under the ministry.
The alleged financial misappropriation involves the transfer of N37.1 billion from the Federal Government’s coffers to 38 different bank accounts linked to or connected with Okwete. The contractor reportedly used the funds for various transactions, including transfers to Bureau De Change operators, cash withdrawals, purchase of luxury cars, and acquisition of properties in Abuja and Enugu.
Umar-Farouq served as the pioneer Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2019. The investigation is part of broader efforts by the EFCC to address corruption and financial misconduct within the government.
