The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has given the green light for the implementation of a Group Personal Accident Insurance Policy (GPAIP) covering all Nigerian Air Force personnel. Despite the Ministry of Defence having a Group Life Assurance Policy for military personnel, the existing policy primarily caters to the families of personnel killed in action and lacks provisions for medical expenses arising from accidents.
Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, the Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, clarified that the introduction of the new policy aligns with the Air Chief’s command philosophy, aiming to bolster a highly motivated force through enhanced welfare and infrastructure renewal.
According to a statement, “While several insurance policies administered by the Ministry of Defence and the NAF Investment Limited cover all NAF personnel, they do not, however, adequately address some hazards and challenges encountered in the course of the careers of personnel. The need to review and implement a specialized insurance scheme designed to address these hazards and unique challenges thus became imperative.”
Abubakar emphasized that under the GPAIP, NAF personnel would be motivated to give their best, secure in the knowledge of adequate care in the event of disability or death during military operations or any form of accident. The policy is designed to provide compensation for bodily injuries, death, disablement, and cover medical expenses.
