Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, has declared that his party is now Nigeria’s main opposition party and will continue in that role in 2024. Prior to Obi’s entry into the presidential race under the LP, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had been considered the main opposition party after losing the presidency in 2015.
In his New Year message to Nigerians, Obi stated that the LP would remain firmly in opposition, keeping the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) accountable to protect the interests of Nigerians. He cautioned against turning the country into a one-party state and emphasized the need to prevent undue federal government interference in the internal affairs of states, especially when national security is not at risk.
Obi expressed gratitude to LP members, the Obidient Family, friends, and well-wishers for their loyalty and commitment to true democracy. He called for constructive engagement with Nigerians and friends who have realized the implications of certain decisions, highlighting the importance of collective efforts in nation-building.
The former Anambra State governor reaffirmed his commitment to the struggle for a New Nigeria and urged others striving for positive change to remain engaged, committed, and resilient. Obi stressed the need for good governance, inclusive development, and accountable leadership in building a functional democracy and a sustainable nation. He called for an end to the undermining of national institutions and the concentration of state affairs and resources in the hands of a few individuals and private interests for Nigeria to move forward.
