A tragic boat mishap in the River Niger resulted in the loss of five lives as individuals attempted to sail from Kogi state to Anambra. The incident occurred on a Sunday morning, with victims predominantly comprising women and children. The victims, hailing from a riverine part of Kogi State, were reportedly traveling to Onitsha for various business purposes.
Upon receiving a distress call about the incident, the Anambra State Police Command promptly deployed a rescue team to the scene. The team successfully rescued over 30 individuals from the river within Anambra West local government area.
While the deceased persons could not be identified at the time of reporting, they were known to be from Kogi state and Mmiata Anam in Anambra East local government area. An eyewitness described the capsized boat incident, noting that it occurred early in the morning.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, provided information about the rescue efforts, stating that marine operatives responded swiftly to the distress call. The team managed to rescue over 30 passengers alive, recovered the five lifeless bodies, and salvaged the capsized boat. The cause of the incident is still under investigation as authorities work to ascertain the circumstances leading to the boat mishap.
