The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army reported significant achievements in countering illegal activities in the Niger Delta region during 2023. According to Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding the 6 Division and Land Component Commander of the Joint Task Force, Operation Delta Safe, a total of 233 illegal refineries were destroyed, and 112 suspects were arrested in the region.
Major General Abdussalam provided these details during the 6 Division Combined West African Social Activities at the 29 Battalion Parade Ground in Port Harcourt Barracks. He also disclosed that 72 trucks/vehicles were impounded, and 356 arms and ammunition were recovered during the operations.
The General Officer Commanding emphasized that these efforts align with the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Toareed Lagbaja’s command philosophy. He reassured residents and the business community that the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other agencies, is committed to providing an enabling environment for seamless oil production in the Niger Delta region. This, he said, is essential for the country to meet its oil production targets for the year 2024 and possibly exceed them.
Major General Abdussalam urged the army personnel to approach their activities in 2024 with renewed zeal, vigor, and commitment. The event also featured cultural displays, comedy, tug of war, presentation of awards, and the observance of the regimental beating of retreat. Brigadier General Eddet Effiong, the Commander of the 6 Division Garrison, expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff for his support and to the GOC for the opportunity to serve in that capacity.
