Teachers in Plateau State have decided to halt their planned strike set to commence on Monday. The decision to suspend the strike was made during a meeting held on Sunday in Jos, the state capital. The meeting included representatives from the 17 Local Government chairmen in the state and labor unions.
The announcement of the strike suspension came from Marshall Dachung, the state Secretary of the Nigerian Union Teachers. He revealed that the decision was in pursuit of implementing an agreement previously signed on July 5, 2023, between the 17 Local Government Council Chairmen of Plateau State and The Plateau State Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (IPSNC), NLC, and TUC. The agreement encompassed NULGE, NUT, NANNM, NASU, and MHWUN.
As part of the resolutions reached during the meeting, it was decided that one-month salary arrears would be paid alongside the January 2024 salary for Local Governments Councils. Additionally, the personnel audit exercise would capture staff due for promotion, ensuring their current promotion status and arrears are paid after the audit, with the promotion set to be implemented by January 2024.
Furthermore, the promotion of junior staff of non-professional teachers would be expedited, allowing for immediate capture during the personnel audit exercise and subsequent implementation. The collaborative efforts between the 17 Local Government Council Chairmen and labor representatives have contributed to averting the impending strike, promoting a resolution-focused approach to address the concerns of the teachers in Plateau State.
