President Bola Tinubu has reportedly settled the outstanding payment owed by the Federal Government to the Super Eagles and other national sports teams in Nigeria. The X handle of Tinubu’s Media Centre released a statement on Sunday, highlighting the payment of N12 billion to address various financial obligations.
The payment encompasses clearing the salaries of senior national team coaches for a period of 15 months, settling allowances, and fulfilling promises owed to both the senior national teams (including the Super Eagles) and the females’ and Under-20 national teams.
The statement emphasized that this financial support comes at a crucial time as the Super Eagles of Nigeria are gearing up to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to commence later in the month. The move by President Tinubu is aimed at providing the necessary financial backing to enhance the teams’ preparations and overall performance.
It is worth noting that the Super Eagles had previously achieved a third-place finish in a tournament, trailing behind winners Algeria and runners-up Senegal. The timely payment is expected to contribute positively to the morale and readiness of the national teams as they represent Nigeria on the continental stage.
