The Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, Aderemi Adeoye, announced the arrest of approximately 30 suspects, including individuals involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, cult activities, and other criminal acts that have plagued the state in recent times. The arrests were made between December 1, 2023, and the current date, with Adeoye providing details during a press briefing at the police headquarters in Awka on Monday.
Adeoye revealed that the arrests included 12 kidnapping suspects, nine armed robbery suspects, six cult members, and three insurgents. The apprehensions were the result of operations conducted based on credible information received by the police. Two abducted victims were successfully rescued during confrontations with criminals, though some police officers were injured in the process.
The commissioner highlighted the recovery of 11 stolen vehicles, 12 firearms, and 40 live ammunition from the criminal groups. He emphasized the dedication of the police force to ensuring the safety of residents, mentioning the sacrifice made by law enforcement officers during the Christmas and New Year celebrations to maintain peace in Anambra State.
Adeoye recounted specific incidents, such as the pursuit and confrontation with criminals responsible for killing two police officers on December 28, 2023. The police force successfully located their camp in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area, where three criminals were neutralized. In the process, a 51-year-old kidnap victim was rescued.
He praised the media for its role in highlighting police activities and assured the public that the police would continue to provide accurate and transparent reports on their efforts. Adeoye acknowledged the prevailing peace in Anambra State but noted concerns about traffic congestion.
