The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the assassination of Bashorun Akarigbo, Sagamu, Chief Abiodun Folarin on Monday night. The traditional chief, also known as Baasegun of Itunsokun community in Sagamu, was attacked by three assailants who arrived in a Toyota Camry car at around 10:45 pm.
The assailants reportedly shot into the air to disperse people before targeting the victim, shooting him dead at his Itunsokun residence. The attackers left the scene without taking anything, suggesting a targeted murder or assassination. Bashorun Abiodun Folarin was buried on Tuesday following Islamic rites.
SP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the incident, describing it as a suspected case of murder or assassination. She stated that three gunmen had been involved in the attack and that the police were actively investigating the matter. Two expended cartridges were recovered from the crime scene.
The news of the traditional chief’s killing raised tension in Sagamu, with some residents speculating that he might have been targeted by cultists due to his involvement in efforts against the menace of cultism in the community.
Various individuals, including traditional rulers, expressed sadness and frustration over the incident. While the police have initiated an investigation, the community remains on edge, with some taking precautions to avoid potential violence. The motive behind the assassination is still under investigation.
