The Supreme Court has announced that judgments on appeals in governorship disputes from seven states, namely Lagos, Kano, Plateau, Zamfara, Bauchi, Cross-River, and Ebonyi, are scheduled to be delivered on Friday, January 11, 2023. Notices regarding these impending judgments have been sent to concerned parties.
The apex court previously heard and reserved judgments on two appeals related to the governorship election in Lagos State. The appeals were filed by Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party (LP) and Azeez Adediran of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the election of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. These appeals contested the decisions of the Court of Appeal in Lagos, which upheld the election tribunal’s dismissal of their petitions challenging Sanwo-Olu’s victory.
Similarly, the Supreme Court heard and reserved judgment on appeals related to the governorship election in Kano State, with Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) challenging the election tribunal’s decision voiding his victory.
In the case of Plateau State, the Supreme Court heard three appeals, including one by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, seeking to overturn the November 19 judgment of the Court of Appeal, which nullified his election.
On January 11, the Supreme Court will also rule on the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Senator (Prof) Sandy Ojang Onor, challenging the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the Cross River State governorship election.
Additionally, the Supreme Court has reserved judgment on the appeal by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, challenging the Court of Appeal’s decision affirming the election of Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the Governor of Ogun State. The court noted that it was unnecessary to hear Abiodun’s appeal in this matter.
