A significant number of passengers are reportedly missing following the capsizing of a boat carrying approximately 100 passengers in Niger State on Monday. The boat, departing from Dugga Mashaya in Dugga ward, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, was en route to Wara market in Kebbi State. It was transporting both people and goods, including grains and sugar cane, according to Abdullahi Arah, the Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).
The exact count of casualties and survivors remains uncertain, but search and rescue operations are currently underway. Abdullahi Arah assured that the NSEMA, along with local divers, desk officers, and government officials, is actively engaged in the ongoing efforts to locate and assist those affected. This incident follows a tragic boat accident in November 2023 when 34 individuals, including 10 children, were on a boat that capsized during a journey from Zangoro Bassa/Kukoki Ward terminal to Gijiwa/Kato Ward terminal in the Shiroro Local Government Area. NSEMA’s investigation revealed that a combination of factors, including water hyacinth, strong waves, and grafting trees, contributed to the capsizing. The victims, including eight children, were laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.
