President Bola Tinubu has stated that he inherited both the liabilities and assets of former President Muhammadu Buhari when he assumed office in May 2023. Tinubu made this statement at the launch of two books on the former President: “Working with Buhari: Reflections of a former Special Adviser to the President, Media & Publicity” by Femi Adesina, and “Muhammadu Buhari: The Nigerian Legacy” by Dr. Udu Yakubu.
Tinubu acknowledged that when Buhari left office, he left behind a lot of pens and files for continuity, and the transition involved inheriting both the positive and negative aspects of the previous administration. He quoted Buhari advising him that it would be difficult to please everyone as a leader and urged him to work hard and satisfy his conscience.
During the event, President Tinubu commended Buhari for his integrity, transparency, and commitment to probity and service during his tenure. He expressed gratitude to the former President for not interfering in government matters after leaving office.
Former President Buhari, in his remarks, thanked President Tinubu for attending the event and highlighted the challenges of the presidential office, emphasizing the importance of records keeping and accountability for stewardship.
General Yakubu Gowon, the Chairman of the occasion and former Head of State, commended Buhari for his actions to buoy the economy, contain insecurity, and stabilize the polity. He also expressed confidence in handing over to President Tinubu, describing him as another great leader who will give Nigeria a new direction.
