The Federal Government has given assurance that it will clear the arrears of the N35,000 wage award and has resumed payment of the wage award. The commitment was reiterated by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, during separate meetings with the leaderships of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Congress of University Academics.
Onyejeocha emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing issues in the National Minimum Wage agreement reached with Organized Labour in 2023. She highlighted the importance of open communication, strengthening labor relations, and fostering a harmonious work environment. The minister acknowledged the challenges faced by trade unions and assured them that the government was actively working to fulfill agreements.
During the meetings, Onyejeocha stated, “I am here specifically to reassure you that we have not forgotten about the agreements between the government and trade unions. Thank God that you have confirmed that the federal government has started paying the N35,000 wage award, and I can assure you that the payment is on course, and the outstanding will be paid within a short period.”
She also addressed the issue of a new national minimum wage, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing it promptly. The minister commended the Trade Union Congress for their cooperation and assured them of the government’s readiness to listen and partner for the greater good.
In response, the President of the Trade Union Congress, Comrade Festus Osifo, commended the government for some steps taken, specifically acknowledging the fulfillment of 80 percent of the agreement with the management of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria. Osifo urged the government to fulfill the remaining 20 percent of that agreement.
This assurance from the government follows discussions on wage adjustments as a measure to alleviate the impacts of the fuel subsidy removal, and it reflects the ongoing commitment to address labor-related issues in collaboration with trade unions.
