The Minister of Solid Minerals, Mr. Dele Alake, spoke out on Monday in Ibadan, revealing that influential individuals within Nigeria are linked to the banditry associated with illegal mining activities in the country.
Mr. Alake made this assertion while visiting the site of an explosion that took place in the Adeyi area of Bodija the previous week. Addressing the issue of illegal miners and bandits causing chaos in Nigeria, Alake stated, “In my budget defense, I did say categorically that powerful Nigerians are behind the banditry associated with illegal mining in this country.”
Alake disclosed that he had received threats since making these statements but emphasized that he remained undaunted. He clarified that his remarks were based on intelligence reports and that the issue extended across various strata of society, involving individuals at high, medium, and low levels.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Alake emphasized the need for both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies to combat the menace. He pointed out the collaboration between the Federal Government, state governments, local governments, and host communities to address the issue effectively. Alake stressed that bandits sponsored by influential figures had access to significant funding, weaponry, and even laid mines against ground forces, necessitating military engagement.
Regarding compensation for those affected by the explosion, Alake stated that the Federal Government’s response would be comprehensive, awaiting the forensic investigation report before taking any decisive actions. He assured that justice would prevail, and perpetrators of the heinous act would face legal consequences.
During his visit to the incident site, Alake was received by Prof. Temitope Alonge, the head of the emergency operations center, Engr. Seyi Makinde’s SA, and retired CP Fatai Owoseeni.
