In a recent development, a Kano State High Court, under the leadership of Chief Judge Justice Dije Aboki, has convicted and sentenced five members of a vigilance group to death by hanging. This verdict is in connection to the extra-judicial killing of a 17-year-old male, Ahmed Musa, by the convicted individuals who were attached to the Sani Abacha Youth Centre.
The prosecution lead counsel, Lamido Dinki, stated that the convicted persons committed the offense on January 22, 2022, at Sabon Titi, Panshekara, Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state. According to Dinki, the convicts conspired to attack and brutally assault the deceased, using a long wooden hard club and a sharp knife. The victim suffered severe injuries and was eventually whisked away in a tricycle.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, Ahmed Musa was confirmed dead on arrival. The prosecution presented five witnesses to support their case, while the defense, led by Ahmad Muhammad, presented the convicted persons who denied committing the offense. The presiding judge, Justice Aboki, expressed satisfaction with the evidence presented by the prosecution, stating, “The prosecution has presented its case beyond reasonable doubt. I, hereby, sentence the five defendants to death by hanging.” The charges against the convicts contravened Sections 97 and 221 (b) of the Penal Code.
