President Bola Tinubu has urged the Super Eagles to elevate their performance and deliver stronger results in the concluding stages of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire. The President’s message was conveyed through the Minister of Sports, John Enoh, who addressed the players from Abuja via Zoom on Wednesday night in Abidjan.
Enoh revealed that President Tinubu expressed some dissatisfaction with the team’s performance in the group stage and emphasized the need for improvement in the upcoming matches. During a meeting with the President, Enoh shared, “I had a meeting with the President yesterday. I went to the villa for something else and the President cornered me and said we (Eagles) managed to qualify and I said that’s how we are going to keep going until we win the tournament.”
He continued, “He said that I should tell the players that he wasn’t too impressed with the last match but he knows that now that they are off the group stages, they are going to impress him more.” Enoh highlighted that the President is closely following the matches and expects a more impressive performance from the team in the knockout stages.
Team captain, Ahmed Musa, expressed gratitude to the sports minister for conveying the President’s message but also invited President Tinubu to witness their matches live. Musa believes the President’s presence would serve as a motivational factor for the players. The Super Eagles are set to face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the last 16 of the tournament on Saturday at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.
