Operatives of the Special Intervention Squad in the Federal Capital Territory Police Command have reportedly neutralized three notorious bandits, including their gang leader, Mai Gemu, also known as Godara, in a forest within the Bwari area of Abuja. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, January 26, around 2 am, in a forest linking Abuja to Kaduna State.
Mai Gemu and his gang members were known for terrorizing the FCT and neighboring states. The Special Intervention Squad, established under the command of Inspector General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun, conducted the operation.
According to Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, the SIS neutralized the kidnap kingpin and two other members of his gang in an exchange of gunfire. The operation is part of ongoing efforts to fortify the security landscape in the Federal Capital Territory.
The FCT Special Intervention Squad had taken control of a major route in Usafa, Bwari Area Council, used by bandits to transport their victims out of Abuja into neighboring states of Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, and Kogi.
The surge in insecurity has been a growing concern in the FCT, with an increase in criminal activities, particularly kidnappings. The recent incident involved the abduction of 23 persons, including members of the Al-Kadriyar and the Ariyo families, on January 2, 2024, in the Bwari Area Council.
