A recent attack in Owerri, Nigeria, has resulted in the tragic deaths of at least four individuals, with two of the victims identified as policemen reportedly on duty in the area. The incident occurred at a junction, where gunmen opened fire, leaving the victims dead. A video clip circulating on social media platforms shows the lifeless bodies of the victims.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear as of the time of the report. The assailants reportedly fled the scene after carrying out the attack. Additionally, there were reports of Point of Sale (POS) operators being targeted in separate incidents in Owerri on the same day. Armed men attacked POS shops and individuals, robbing them of cash and valuables.
Residents shared their accounts of the attacks on social media, detailing incidents where criminals targeted POS operators in various locations, including Rapour Junction, Amawire – Orji on the Owerri – Okigwe Road, and Christiana junction at Egbu Road. The police spokesperson in the state, Henry Okoye, stated that he had yet to be briefed on the situation when contacted and promised to provide information after making inquiries.
These incidents highlight the ongoing security challenges in some parts of Nigeria, with attacks on law enforcement officers and civilians causing concern and prompting a need for swift action to address the underlying issues.
