The Ogun State Police Command has officially stated that Olumide Openaike, an employee of Kemta Oloko Microfinance Bank, who was reported missing and later found in Mokwa, Niger State, orchestrated his own abduction to evade a debt of N1.7 million. SP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed this revelation on Tuesday.
The wife of the purportedly missing banker, Temitope, had earlier informed the media about her husband’s disappearance on January 17 while en route to work. However, she later reported on Thursday that Olumide had been located in Mokwa, Niger State, after he contacted her. According to Temitope, her husband explained that he had retrieved a phone from a resident in Mokwa because his abductors had taken his phone. Upon her advice, he reported the incident to the local police station, and arrangements were made for his transportation back to Abeokuta.
Contrary to the reported abduction, the police have now disclosed that Olumide Openaike’s disappearance was a staged event. SP Omolola Odutola confirmed, “Yes, the police have found out that the banker, Olumide Openaike, faked his abduction over N1.7m debt. The money belongs to the bank where he works.” It was revealed that Openaike diverted funds meant for the bank into personal use, leading to financial irregularities. Following this discovery, he is currently detained by the police.
