A 47-year-old man has been apprehended by the Lagos State Police Command for the possession of counterfeit Nigerian currency. The suspect, known as Shola, was arrested on January 17, 2024, around 6:30 pm at Apapa Under Bridge, Lagos.
According to SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the command, Shola was taken into custody after using fake naira notes to purchase goods worth N7,000 at Oba Abdulfatai Aromire Ojora market in Ijora. Following his arrest, he was handed over to officers at the Ijora Badia Police Division.
During the investigation, an additional sum of fake N6,000 was discovered in the possession of the suspect, bringing the total amount of suspected counterfeit naira notes recovered to N13,000. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Yaba, Lagos, for further inquiry.
Hundeyin stated, “The suspect admitted to the commission of the crime and mentioned where he purchased the suspected counterfeit currencies. The exhibits recovered have been duly registered, and efforts are in progress to apprehend other accomplices connected to the crime.” The police are actively working on the case to uncover any additional individuals involved in the production or distribution of counterfeit currency.
