The esteemed poet and playwright, Chief Jimi Solanke, passed away on Monday at the age of 81. Reports indicate that he breathed his last while being transported from his country residence in Ipara Remo, Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun State, to Babcock University Teaching Hospital in Ilisan.
Chief Solanke had reportedly been in and out of the hospital since December and succumbed to the grasp of death on Monday morning. Hon Dickson Awolaja, representing Remo North State Constituency in the state Assembly, confirmed the departure of the exceptionally talented artist.
Expressing condolences, Hon Awolaja remarked, “I received news of the passing of Pa Jimi Solanke not long ago. His death is undeniably another significant loss to us in Remo North and Ogun State as a whole, given his valuable contributions to the development of our dear nation. May his soul rest in peace.”
Chief Jimi Solanke, also affectionately known as Uncle Jimi, gained renown for his works such as Kongi’s Harvest, Sango, Shadow Parties, and more. His artistic legacy has left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.
