The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a pregnant woman, Blessing Godday, for allegedly stabbing another woman, Mrs. Imeran Idema, to death over a bunch of plantain. The incident occurred in Adada community in the Abua/Odual Local Government Area of the state. Blessing, a 32-year-old mother of nine, reportedly stabbed Idema when the latter tried to stop her from running away with a bunch of plantain that she allegedly stole from a plantation while attempting to get food for her children.
The altercation between the two women took place on January 28, 2023, but Blessing was arrested on Friday. Mrs. Idema, who was overseeing the plantation for her family, confronted Blessing and asked her to surrender the stolen plantain. Blessing attempted to escape, leading to a chase by Idema. An argument ensued, resulting in Idema landing a blow on Blessing’s right foot. In retaliation, Blessing attacked Idema with her machete, inflicting two cuts on Idema’s head and shoulder.
Imeran collapsed in pain, and Blessing fled the scene, leaving the stolen plantain behind. Members of Idema’s family, who heard her screams, came to her aid, took her for medical treatment, and reported the case to the police. Blessing was initially arrested, questioned, and released to receive medical attention for the cut on her foot. However, upon learning of Imeran’s death, she was rearrested.
The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, stating that Blessing had been charged to court. The tragic incident underscores the seriousness of interpersonal conflicts leading to fatal consequences and the need for peaceful resolution methods.
