A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Adamawa State, identified as Samuel from Kaduna State, reportedly passed away while watching the penalty shootout between Nigeria and South Africa in the AFCON semi-finals on Wednesday evening.
The tragic incident occurred just before the final kick, securing Nigeria’s victory in the match. According to a witness’s social media post, Samuel fainted before the winning goal kick and died before reaching the hospital in Numan.
The NYSC Coordinator in Adamawa State, Jingi Dennis, confirmed the corps member’s death at the General Hospital in Numan. Dennis stated that he received the news of the death the previous night and expected to gather more details.
Reportedly, Samuel had expressed his discomfort with watching penalty shootouts to those around him before collapsing suddenly. Despite efforts to reach the hospital, he was confirmed dead by a doctor at the General Hospital in Numan.
In a similarly tragic incident, former member of the House of Representatives, Dr Cairo Ojougboh, representing the Ika Federal Constituency of Delta State, also passed away on Wednesday evening while watching the AFCON semi-finals between Nigeria and South Africa. Sources close to the politician revealed that Dr Ojougboh suffered a massive heart attack and collapsed when South Africa scored a penalty against Nigeria.
