The Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo has ordered the Commissioner of Police, CP Ayilara Adedamola, to arrest and detain Henry Edet Unung at the Uyo Correctional Centre for one month. The court issued this order after Unung deliberately refused to comply with a previous court order directing him to provide financial support and care for his three children.
Justice Ntong Ntong, presiding over the case, stated that Unung’s actions amounted to contempt and disrespect for the court. The court had previously ordered Unung to pay a monthly maintenance allowance of N20,000, provide food items, pay school fees, and meet other needs of his children. Despite reminders and enforcement efforts, Unung continued to disregard the court’s directives.
Describing Unung’s conduct as “satanic,” Justice Ntong emphasized that the welfare of the children should not be abandoned. The court, invoking its inherent and legitimate rights, ordered the police to keep Unung in prison custody for one month as a penalty for contempt. Unung will have the opportunity to purge himself of contempt when brought back before the court after the specified period.
The case has been adjourned to Thursday, March 28, 2024.
