President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to depart Abuja on Thursday for Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, where he will participate in the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union Heads of State and Government. This was disclosed in a statement by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.
During the summit, President Tinubu will engage in high-level meetings addressing institutional reforms of the African Union, as well as discussions on peace and security. Specific thematic issues, including climate change and the AU’s role and priorities in the G20, are expected to be on the agenda. The summit’s theme is “Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa.”
On the sidelines of the session, President Tinubu will also participate in an extraordinary summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in his capacity as the Chairman of the regional body.
The statement noted that President Tinubu would be accompanied by ministers and other top government officials, and he is expected to return to Abuja following the summit. Ethiopia marks the fourth African state visited by President Tinubu since assuming the presidency nine months ago, making it his 15th foreign destination and 11th trip overall. Previous visits include Paris, London, Bissau, Nairobi, Porto Norvo, New Delhi, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, New York, Riyadh, and Berlin.
