Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has responded to the concerns raised by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar, regarding the country’s rising insecurity and poverty. Igboho emphasized the need for patience and careful planning to address these challenges effectively.
The Sultan, in his capacity as the chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council, expressed deep concern about the precarious situation in Nigeria, citing the issues of poverty, hardship, and insecurity during the sixth executive meeting of the council in Kaduna. He urged the Federal Government to take decisive action to alleviate the suffering of the masses, who are grappling with hunger and frustration.
In response, Igboho, in a press release he signed, acknowledged the validity of Abubakar’s concerns about the state of the nation. However, he cautioned against laying the blame for the current economic challenges, insecurity, food inflation, unemployment, and youth restiveness solely on the administration of Bola Tinubu, which has been in office for only about eight months.
While recognizing the impact of farmer-herder clashes on food production and the agriculture value chain, Igboho highlighted the devastating consequences of attacks by rampaging herdsmen on farmlands during the previous administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He urged an understanding of the efforts being made by the current administration to address inflation, foreign exchange issues, and high food prices.
Igboho pointed out the recent government decision to deploy troops for the protection of farmers against herders’ attacks, which he believes will boost the confidence of farmers and encourage them to return to their farms. Additionally, he mentioned the plan to establish a National Commodity Board, aiming to regulate and stabilize commodity prices, particularly in the face of escalating food inflation.
In conclusion, Igboho stressed the importance of allowing the incumbent administration to explore and implement measures to address the multifaceted challenges faced by the nation, expressing confidence that these efforts will yield positive results in due course.
