The Nigerian Federal Government has introduced state-of-the-art 30-second biometric clearance gates at key international airports across the country, aiming to enhance the efficiency of immigration services. The designated airports include Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Port Harcourt International Airport, and Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.
During an inspection visit to Abuja International Airport, Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed that Lagos will receive 17 gates, Abuja 10, while Port Harcourt and Kano will each have five, and Enugu four. The implementation of these gates is anticipated to streamline the clearance process for passengers entering the country through these international hubs.
Tunji-Ojo expressed his satisfaction with the progress, stating that the facilities are approximately 70% complete. He emphasized that this development aligns with global best practices and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to provide high-quality services to Nigerians.
Highlighting the significance of the biometric gates, Tunji-Ojo remarked, “The efficiency of the services provided by the NIS determines whatever we see in our security outlook as a nation.” He further explained that the gates not only expedite passenger clearance but also contribute to national security by allowing the Immigration Service to identify individuals of interest.
The Minister concluded by noting that the installation of these gates is a pivotal step in advancing the National Security Architecture and ensuring the safety of the nation, emphasizing their commitment to providing top-notch services while adhering to global standards.
