Parish Priest, St Anthony Catholic Church Gbessa, Rev. Fr Victor Ogunyemi has emphasized that fasting, when done with the right intentions, can break the bonds of weakness.
Fr Ogunyemi, who made the emphasis in his homily delivered today in his parish during Mass, centered on the theme “Actions that please God”.
Focusing on the text from Isaiah 58:6-7, the Parish Priest cautioned against fasting for mere show or with impure motives, such as to quarrel or fight, as he maintained that such fasting would not be rewarded by God.
He however, encouraged fasting that aims to release the oppressed, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, clothe the naked, and be generous to relatives.
Fr Ogunyemi, a priest of Abuja Archdiocese, who also works with the Social Communications Department of the Archdiocese, highlighted the rewards of such fasting, including the breaking forth of light, healing, glory, answered prayers, and the assurance that God is present and attentive when called upon.
He urged the faithful to engage in purposeful and sacrificial fasting, while advocating for justice.
