In a recent development, a Sharia Court in Kano State, under the jurisdiction of Khadi Yusuf-Ahmed, has issued an order for popular TikToker, Murja Kunya, to undergo a mental evaluation at a government hospital. Kunya is currently facing a three-count charge, including inciting public disturbance, affiliation with a criminal gang, and criminal intimidation.
The charges stem from one of Kunya’s TikTok videos that gained widespread attention, where she declared herself the “leader of all prostitutes in the city.” Justice Yusuf-Ahmad, in delivering the ruling, expressed concern about the defendant’s mental state, suspecting the influence of drugs. Consequently, he directed that Kunya be taken to a public hospital for a thorough mental health assessment.
Justice Yusuf-Ahmad emphasized the need for the Kano State Hisbah Board to provide updates on the defendant’s well-being to the court over the next three months. The prosecutor, Barrister Aliyu Abideen, had earlier informed the court that Kunya was apprehended by the Hisbah Board following multiple complaints from the public.
Abideen detailed allegations against the defendant, citing her disturbance of the Tishama Hotoro Quarters in Kano by bringing unruly individuals at midnight and utilizing social media to incite disturbances. Kunya, however, denied the charges. The prosecutor specified that the alleged offenses contravene sections 341, 275, and 227 of the Kano State Shari’a Law.
