In a recent development at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, Akinosun Omotayo has been handed a 10-year prison sentence for a crime involving theft and attempted rape on New Year’s Day. The sentencing was delivered by Justice Modupe Nico-Clay, who considered a plea bargain agreement entered into by Omotayo to mitigate his punishment.
The charges brought against Omotayo by the Lagos State Government included stealing, attempted rape, and assault. The incident, which occurred on January 1, 2019, at Lekki County Home Ikota, Ajah area of Lagos, involved the theft of valuable items amounting to N415,000 from Mr. Olukayode Ojo. Omotayo also attempted to rape and assaulted the adopted daughter of the complainant.
During the trial, the prosecution, led by Mrs. Adeshola Adekunle-Bello, presented evidence that Omotayo forcibly entered the victim’s residence, stole electronic devices and clothing, and attempted to carry out the heinous act. The charges against him were based on Sections 297 (10), 262, and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
Despite initially pleading not guilty, Omotayo changed his plea to guilty on October 19, 2023, leading to an amendment of the charges to two counts of stealing and attempted felony. In the recent court session, Justice Nico-Clay sentenced Omotayo to 10 years in prison, with the term retroactively starting from January 16, 2019, the date of his initial remand.
