The Department of State Services (DSS) has called on organized labor to reconsider its planned nationwide protests against the current economic situation in Nigeria. The organized labor had scheduled a two-day protest on February 27 and 28 to express discontent over the government’s failure to fulfill promises made after a 14-day ultimatum.

In a statement by its spokesman, Peter Afunanya, the DSS urged the labor union to prioritize dialogue and negotiation rather than engaging in activities that might escalate tensions. The security agency expressed concern that some elements might exploit the protest to instigate crises and violence, which could worsen the socio-economic situation in the country.

The DSS acknowledged that the government is working to address the prevailing economic challenges and urged citizens to give the authorities the benefit of the doubt. The statement cited ongoing efforts by various levels of government, working with stakeholders, to develop strategies to tackle the current difficulties.

The security agency also emphasized the need for internal stability and unity, cautioning against actions that could lead to escalated conflicts. It called on parents and guardians to guide their children and wards away from activities that could jeopardize public safety.

Furthermore, the DSS urged all sectors, including political parties, opposition groups, religious and traditional institutions, civil society, and non-governmental bodies, to avoid violence and demonstrate leadership in these challenging times. It cautioned against making political capital out of the current situation and urged citizens to be vigilant against forces seeking to destabilize the nation.

The DSS emphasized its opposition to violence as a means of settling challenges and pledged to work with other security and law enforcement agencies to ensure lasting peace in the country.
