Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced on Thursday that his administration is taking measures to alleviate the cost of living crisis in the country. As part of these plans, the working days for public servants will be reduced. Starting from next week, civil servants at lower levels will work three times a week, while those at levels 15-17 can work four times a week. The governor made this declaration during a media parley on economic hardships.
To address the escalating cost of food, Sanwo-Olu stated that more markets would be opened across Lagos, offering discounted rates for essential food items. Sunday Markets will be established in 42 identified markets, allowing residents to purchase discounted items up to the value of N25,000.
In tackling rising food prices, the governor mentioned the construction of four food hubs, in addition to the existing one at Idi-Oro in Mushin. Seven other locations in various local governments have been earmarked for the development of additional food hubs.
To ease the financial burden on transportation, a 25% reduction in fares for the State Public Transport system (BRT, Train, Ferry) will be implemented starting this weekend.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also announced free delivery services for pregnant residents across all government-owned hospitals in Lagos, covering both regular and cesarean deliveries. Additionally, his administration plans to offer rebates on specific drugs at state government hospitals to address the rising costs of pharmaceutical products.
In a bid to further support citizens, the governor revealed ongoing discussions with various transport unions to reduce their fares. Sanwo-Olu expressed empathy for the challenges faced by citizens and emphasized the need for leaders to proactively address socioeconomic problems. He called on the private sector to play a role in supporting the public, challenging them to replicate the positive contributions made during the COVID-19 pandemic.
