Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, has appealed to the Yoruba people not to participate in ongoing protests across the country regarding the current economic challenges. The Yoruba people are primarily from the southwestern states, including Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Ekiti, and Oyo. While acknowledging the hardships faced by the people, Reuben Fasoranti, the chairman of Afenifere’s elders caucus, urged Nigerians to be understanding of the current situation.
Fasoranti emphasized that the economic measures implemented by the Federal Government, though difficult, are aimed at bringing prosperity to the entire country. He urged Yoruba citizens, as well as citizens from other nationalities, to exercise patience and refrain from engaging in protests or actions that may escalate tensions.
In a statement, Fasoranti stated, “While acknowledging the hardships faced by our people, it is important to recognize that these economic measures, although difficult, are part of a larger strategy aimed at restoring economic prosperity and stability to Nigeria.” He highlighted the commitment of the government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to address the root causes of the country’s economic challenges.
Fasoranti called for constructive dialogue and positive contributions to ongoing economic reforms, emphasizing the need for unity and understanding among the people. He urged Nigerians to trust in the government’s commitment to the welfare of the nation, stating that the Federal Government’s policies are designed to create a more sustainable economic environment for the long run.
He acknowledged the pain associated with the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the Naira, noting the damage caused to national prosperity by nefarious activities within the oil and financial sectors. Fasoranti concluded by calling for collective understanding and resilience from every citizen during these challenging times.
