Individuals with disabilities have expressed their dismay over the escalating cost of living, inflation, security concerns, and general hardships in Nigeria. On Tuesday, the Nigerian Labour Congress and affiliated unions staged a nationwide protest to highlight their concerns about the prevailing economic challenges in the country.
In a letter signed by Jake Epelle, the Convener of Disability Inclusion Nigeria, it was emphasized that the economic strain is particularly burdensome for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Epelle conveyed deep concern for the well-being of all Nigerians and underscored the alarming consequences of the economic situation, especially for the most vulnerable members of society.
The letter addressed the severe impact of skyrocketing inflation on the purchasing power of Nigerians, hindering access to essential services such as healthcare, education, transportation, and food. Epelle highlighted the disproportionate effect on PWDs, who already grapple with societal and infrastructural challenges.
The convener proposed a comprehensive and inclusive approach to address economic challenges, suggesting the inclusion of PWDs in existing committees or the establishment of a dedicated committee with representatives from the disability community. This committee would be tasked with investigating and addressing the specific challenges faced by Nigerians in light of the economic downturn.
Epelle recommended inclusive interventions by the Federal Government, including the establishment of food banks and stamps at local government levels or geopolitical zones to provide palliative care for persons with disabilities. He also urged additional resources for inclusive education initiatives, affordable transportation infrastructure, and skills development programs tailored to the needs of persons with disabilities.
Moreover, Epelle advised the government to incentivize employers who hire persons with disabilities, create inclusive workplaces, and implement tax breaks for manufacturers and distributors of assistive technologies. He emphasized the importance of regularly assessing the effectiveness of interventions and collecting data on their impact on the lives of persons with disabilities.
