President Bola Tinubu criticized the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), stating that declaring a strike within the first nine months of an administration is unacceptable. Speaking at the unveiling of the Lagos Red Rail Line project on Thursday, he emphasized that the labour leaders are not the sole representatives of the Nigerian people and urged them to wait until 2027 if they wish to participate in the electoral process.
Tinubu expressed optimism about Nigeria overcoming its economic challenges and urged the labour union to understand the need for patience and perseverance. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and suggested that participating in strikes early in an administration is not the solution.
In response to the president’s comments, the NLC suspended its protest for the second day but gave the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to implement previous agreements and address other demands presented in a letter during Tuesday’s nationwide protest.
