A tragic road crash occurred on Monday along the Zaria-Kano Expressway, involving an articulated vehicle with registration number KTG 454 ZZ. The accident resulted in the loss of at least 12 lives, while 28 others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident to PUNCH Metro, attributing the crash to overtaking, speeding, and overloading.
The accident took place at Tashar Yari Village around 7:36 am on Monday. According to a statement from the FRSC media office in Kaduna, the Chairman of Makarfi Local Government Area and the Unit Commander, Tashar Yari, were present at the scene to assess the situation. The statement revealed that 40 people were involved in the crash, with 28 sustaining injuries and 12 losing their lives. The injured individuals were promptly transported to Mararfi General Hospital for further treatment.
The FRSC urged the owner of the vehicle, based in Azare, Bauchi State, to report to RS1.1 Kaduna Sector Command. The driver of the trailer, reportedly among the deceased, has been identified. The statement emphasized the preventable nature of the incident and reiterated the FRSC’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders, particularly transport unions, to educate drivers on the risks associated with speeding, overloading, dangerous driving, and using phones while driving.
Kabir Nadabo, the Kaduna FRSC Sector Commander, appealed to motorists to prioritize safe driving practices, especially on highways. He expressed appreciation to the Kaduna State Government for its continuous support of FRSC activities in the state and acknowledged the media’s role in promoting road safety awareness.
