Fresh details emerging from the robbery attack on two banks in Kogi State last Thursday reveal the tragic loss of one police officer and one security guard during a confrontation with armed robbers. State Commissioner of Police, Bernard Onuoha, confirmed these developments during his visit to the crime scene in Ayingba on Friday.
According to eyewitness accounts, a group of over a dozen armed robbers descended upon the town with the intent of executing a large-scale robbery targeting banks in the area. In response, Commissioner Onuoha condemned the attack and took immediate action by deploying tactical teams to restore normalcy.
In a statement released late Friday by the state police command, the Public Relations Officer, SP William Aya, conveyed that the Deputy Commissioner of the Criminal Investigation Department has been instructed to initiate an investigation into the incident to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The statement read, “Consequent upon the Ayingba banks robbery and the attacks on police stations on Thursday 7/3/2024, the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Police Command, CP Bethrand C. Onuoha, today, 08/03/2024, visited the scenes for on-the-spot assessment and vowed that the hoodlums will be apprehended.”
It continued, “He equally ordered the deployment of tactical teams comprising PMF Personnel, Counter Terrorism, Quick Response, and Intelligence Units in synergy with other security agencies to restore normalcy in the area. Meanwhile, one police constable paid the supreme price during the exchange of fire with the hoodlums before the arrival of the reinforced team to the scenes, and the attackers fled.”
The Commissioner of Police affirmed the command’s commitment to collaborating with other security agencies and stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of Kogi State. He urged the residents to continue assisting the security agencies with credible information about anyone they suspect in their neighborhood.
