Following promises by the Federal Government to address rising food costs and alleviate economic hardships, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Abubakar Kyari has announced the commencement of the distribution of 42,000 metric tonnes of grains across state capitals. The distribution aims to provide immediate relief to vulnerable populations and curb the impacts of ongoing economic reforms.
During an interactive session with the National Assembly Joint Committee on Agriculture Production Services and Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Abubakar Kyari provided insights into the Federal Government’s plan to mitigate rising food costs and ensure food accessibility for the poor and vulnerable in Nigeria.
Invited by lawmakers, led by Senator Saliu Mustapha (APC – Kwara Central), Minister Kyari disclosed that the Federal Government had initiated the distribution of 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains to focal points in state capitals nationwide. This distribution, approved by President Muhammadu Buhari in mid-February, aims to provide immediate relief to Nigerians grappling with economic challenges exacerbated by ongoing reforms.
Minister Kyari emphasized the need for discreet distribution due to the risk of foodstuff vandalism, highlighting collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and other national security agencies. Additionally, he announced the release of 58,500 metric tonnes of milled rice from mega rice millers to stabilize the market and ease food costs.
Addressing reporters after the session, Senator Mustapha expressed satisfaction with the government’s efforts to alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians. He praised the collaborative approach between the government and lawmakers, emphasizing the importance of timely action to address food security concerns.
Minister Kyari reiterated that the government’s actions were aimed at cushioning the impacts of hardships on Nigerians, assuring the committee of ongoing efforts to address issues related to food warehouse vandalism in collaboration with national security outfits.
