President Bola Tinubu has announced a befitting burial and the conferment of posthumous national honors on the 17 soldiers who tragically lost their lives while on a peacekeeping mission in Delta State. The decision was made during a gathering where the President broke the Ramadan fast with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and other House leaders.
Expressing heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, President Tinubu pledged that their sacrifices would never be forgotten. He emphasized the need to honor the bravery and dedication of the fallen heroes by ensuring they receive dignified burials and national recognition for their service to the nation.
The soldiers were killed in the line of duty while responding to distress calls in the Okuama community of Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, where they were ambushed by residents. The Nigerian Army has condemned the attack and denied engaging in any form of reprisal on the community, despite the arrest of several suspects.
The Defense Headquarters has vowed to ensure that those responsible for the attack face the full consequences of their actions. Meanwhile, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas highlighted the importance of forgiveness, generosity, and unity during Ramadan, urging Nigerians to use the holy month to increase their good deeds and support one another.
Reflecting on the cooperation between the executive and legislative branches, Speaker Abbas affirmed the House’s commitment to supporting President Tinubu’s policies for the progress of the nation.
