On Monday, two medical practitioners, Dr. Michael Atiba and Dr. Ugbeye Michael, were brought before the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, facing allegations of involuntary manslaughter following the death of a patient, Ejiro Ugorobi.
Dr. Atiba, affiliated with Gbagada Hospital, and Dr. Michael, a consultant at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, are charged with involuntary manslaughter by the Lagos State Government.
The state’s prosecution counsel, A.O. Azeez, informed the court that the incident occurred on October 21, 2023, around 12 pm, at No. 20 Michael Adekoya Street, Ilupeju area of the state. Azeez alleged that the doctors caused the death of Ejiro Ugorobi by neglecting to administer appropriate anesthesia before and after surgery, a violation of Section 224 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Following their plea, Azeez requested a trial date, stating, “In view of the plea of the defendants, we are asking for a trial date.”
Consequently, the judge adjourned the case until May 15, 2024, for trial.
